Fall Creek Farm & Nursery has expanded its genetics portfolio with the launch of Apex, a new blueberry variety positioned to strengthen early- to mid-season supply in international markets. The release follows several years of commercial-scale trials and grower validation across different production regions.
The company presents Apex as a response to a clear market need: reliable early-season volumes that meet the increasingly strict requirements of export and retail channels. As blueberry programmes aim to extend premium availability throughout the year, sourcing varieties that combine shelf-life, size uniformity and flavour has become more challenging.
Built for supply chain performance
Apex stands out for its balance between agronomic performance and post-harvest behaviour. According to the company, the variety delivers firm fruit with a shelf-life of up to 45 days, alongside large and consistent berry sizing aligned with retail and export standards.
In addition, the variety offers an early- to mid-season harvest window and a yield potential exceeding 20 tonnes per hectare, positioning it as a competitive option for growers targeting high-value markets. Its flavour profile is also designed to support repeat purchases, an increasingly important factor in consumer-driven categories such as fresh berries.
Consistency across production environments
One of the key differentiators highlighted by Fall Creek is the adaptability of the variety across different growing conditions, particularly in zero- and low-chill environments. This characteristic is especially relevant as production expands into regions with diverse climatic profiles.

From a breeding perspective, achieving a combination of shelf-life, fruit size and productivity within an early harvest window remains complex. The company emphasises that Apex maintains these traits consistently across locations, reinforcing its suitability for global production systems.
Integration into a global genetics platform
Apex is now part of the Fall Creek Collection, the company’s open licensing platform designed to provide growers with access to commercially validated varieties. The programme focuses on regionally adapted genetics that have demonstrated performance both in the field and along the supply chain.
The commercial rollout of Apex will be supported through Fall Creek’s global licensing network, with initial efforts focused on importers and retailers in key markets. The strategy aims to build recognition of the variety and stimulate demand as volumes increase.
Alongside its other breeding initiatives, including the Sekoya programme, Fall Creek continues to position itself as a developer of advanced blueberry genetics tailored to different chill requirements and market needs.
