The National Banana Corporation of Costa Rica (CORBANA) has presented the second edition of its Good Agricultural Practices Manual for Banana Cultivation, an updated technical guide designed to optimise crop management on farms and strengthen the competitiveness of the Costa Rican banana industry.
The new publication forms part of CORBANA’s 55th anniversary and responds to the need to update the previous version, published in 2011. It incorporates scientific advances, technological innovations and field-based knowledge accumulated over recent decades.
The manual was developed by professionals from CORBANA’s Technical Assistance Department and Research Department, bringing together the sector’s technical expertise in a single reference document.
A practical tool for the industry
The manual is structured into seven chapters covering all stages of the production process. It offers practical recommendations aimed at improving yield, fruit quality and compliance with national and international standards in biosecurity and sustainability.
“This new edition reflects the evolution of technical knowledge in banana cultivation. More than documenting practices, it seeks to provide the sector with a clear, evidence-based guide that supports decision-making in the field and contributes to improving the sustainability of the crop in its environmental, economic and social dimensions,” said Marcial Chaverri, General Manager of CORBANA S.A.
Technology, research and knowledge transfer
Banana production in Costa Rica integrates agro-industrial processes that continue to evolve alongside technology. In this dynamic context, research, development and technology transfer are essential to maintain and improve efficiency at every stage of the production process.
The update therefore covers everything from basic agricultural techniques to the most innovative practices currently being applied in the sector.

“The manual plays a fundamental role as a consultation tool that guides and aligns agricultural practices with the current conditions and needs of the industry. Its day-to-day application allows progress towards more efficient production across all farms,” explained Erick Bolaños, Director of Technical Assistance at CORBANA S.A.
The Good Agricultural Practices Manual for Banana Cultivation is available exclusively in digital format for Costa Rican business owners, growers, technical and operational staff on banana farms, as well as students and professionals interested in deepening their knowledge of the crop.
With this initiative, CORBANA reaffirms its key role in the technical strengthening of the sector, contributing to knowledge transfer, continuous improvement in Costa Rican banana production and its consolidation in international markets.
