BioProcam is concentrating its bio subtropical fruit production on medium sizes, and in mangos it is opting for late varieties
This year, the company from Granada, BioProcam will have a larger volume of subtropical fruits from its Organisation of Fruit and Vegetable Producers due to the fact that new farms have come into production. They already have 250 h in production and around 50 that are in a growth phase that will be incorporated over the next few years. Therefore, in 2019/20 they expect to exceed 2.5 million tonnes of Hass avocados and produce a great deal more than 200 tonnes of mangos, after the start up of almost 7 h of new crops this campaign. In this last case, the company’s commitment during this year is to concentrate exclusively on late varieties (Kent and Keith), without relying on the very popular Osteen at present, although they already have plantations of this variety that will start to give their first fruits in 2 to 3 year’s time. Likewise, they are giving priority to medium-sized fruits, of between 350-450 gr. per piece, since “the larger ones are more difficult to sell in bio”. Ecological avocado consumers also prefer medium-sized pieces, with calibres of 16-22, “although in this case everything is sold.”
The profitability of these fruit prices for the producers, along with the increase in demand by consumers (both in conventional and in bio), has meant an increase in crops. However, the sector is being slowed down by the lack of water resources. “We have the obstacle of the Rules dam, which has yet to be brought into operation, although there is a large area that could be taken advantage of for crops,” states the manager, Fernando Martín. Meanwhile, a power such as “China is getting into gear with its own plantations and using partners to sow avocados in Central and South America.”
Biopacks in 24 hours
Since last February, it has been possible to buy BioProcam products from their online store, open 24 hours a day, with deliveries throughout Spain and aimed at the catering sector, SMEs and end consumers. Alongside the single-product boxes in the company’s 100% bio fruit and vegetable range, they have ‘biopacks’ (mixed boxes that vary their composition weekly in terms of the availability of seasonal produce). The main advantage is freshness: orders are prepared immediately on arrival from the fields and they reach their destinations in a period of 24-48 hours (except for weekends).
The company will be present at Fruit Attraction with a 32 m² stand in the Andalusia Hall (9C06A).
