Less labour, essential in times of Covid

The cucumber varieties SV5047CE and SV0091CE by Seminis help farmers work, making the tasks more flexible.

In times of pandemic, the programming and optimisation of work in the fields become crucial. According to the first estimates, the healthcare crisis will cause a delay in early cucumber plantations for the next campaign, moving back towards September and delaying the October crops. In general, there will be a 5% reduction in surface area due to this year’s low prices and the greater labour requirements for cucumbers compared to other products such as peppers. Farmers fear a new lockdown and they are taking steps.

The varieties from Seminis, the brand from Bayer, “bring added value to the producers due to the little work they require compared to materials from competitors on these dates,” according to Manuel Martinez, a sales technician from Seminis. The genetics of the company’s latest generation materials, with an open plant, small leaves and a vegetative-productive balance, minimise the need for having workers in the fields.

Examples of this are SV5047CE and SV0091CE. The first one, for transplanting between the 20th of August and the 15th of September, “is possibly the best variety for these dates due to the plant’s balance throughout the entire cycle, which considerably reduces the need for workers on the farm.”

SV0091CE, for transplanting from the 5th of October until December, is another “value in production and quality” and, as with SV5047CE, it makes the work more flexible thanks to the same open-plant genetics and its homogeneity in agronomic performance. “As more light gets in, it encourages aeration and there are fewer problems with mildew, ash, and mycosphaerella”.

This year a new material will be added to its catalogue, SV5766CE, for transplanting between the 15th of September and the 1st of October. As with its predecessors, its plant is very homogeneous both in production and quality, maintaining the grooving and the length (29-31 cm).

Seminis is offering a 5% discount on SV5047CE and SV0091CE from the 1st to the 31st of August. In order to benefit from this promotion, please contact the sales department.
