Vitalis, the ‘guarantee’ of ecological crops

The company boasts the widest range of ‘eco’ seeds in the sector

The key to achieving maximum yield and quality in ecological farming lies in the ‘eco’ seed. Although the legislation in force allows producers to use untreated seeds for this type of plantations when there is no ecological seed available, the results are far from being the same. And the fact is that “as they are not tested under real crop conditions, resistance to pests, diseases and other types of agronomic problems can spoil the harvest”, Myriam López, Organic Sales Manager from Vitalis Organic Seeds, explains. The seed company, a subsidiary of Enza Zaden, is completely devoted to the production and improvement of all kinds of ecological seeds, from crops that are mainly grown under cover (tomato, pepper, cucumber…) to other leafed plants grown in the open air or smaller volume produce such as squash. The company’s experience in this field reaches back over more than two decades and, today, it has the largest catalogue of ecological seeds in the farming sector, offering immediate availability. In addition to this, all its seeds are regulated by the European legislation, EEC 2091/92 and they also have SKAL registration.

The fact of having a company of Enza Zaden’s standing behind them, allows them to guarantee great quality. “We take advantage of the acquired experience and we apply the same techniques and processes used by our parent company in our own facilities, but with ecological seeds”, López qualifies. As a result of this work, they develop significant advances that have allowed them to rely on an extensive R&D programme in many fruit and vegetable crops, with the pepper being one of the most popular ecological products on the European markets. “Our team is currently researching California pepper varieties that are adapted to the Campo de Cartagena and there is another line for the province of Almeria, where we have made major advances in long cycle California pepper”, which will probably start giving results over the year 2017.

In order to make their range and all the new produce visible, the company will be present at Fruit Logistica, in a separate space on Enza Zaden’s stand (Hall 1.2 C-09), where they will display their main brands under which successful concepts in seed varieties are grouped together: TomAzur® organic (high quality and good flavoured tomato), Tribelli® organic (sweet pepper in mini and XL format) and EasyQs® organic (a variety of cucumber that stands out due to its organoleptic qualities).
