According to the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), the proposal seeks to align current regulations with kiwifruit industry practices, allowing producers and distributors greater flexibility while maintaining product quality.
Focus on size and packaging standards
One of the key elements of the proposal is the adjustment of minimum size requirements. The aim is to expand the range of marketable fruit that can reach retail shelves without compromising consumer perception of quality.
In addition, the proposed changes would update packaging standards to better reflect current logistics and commercial realities, supporting a more efficient supply chain.
Equal standards for imports
Under US federal law, any modifications to domestic marketing orders must also apply to imported products. As a result, the proposed updates would extend to kiwifruit entering the US market from overseas, ensuring that imported fruit meets equivalent standards.
Industry-driven initiative
The USDA noted that the proposal was recommended by the Kiwifruit Administrative Committee, a body made up of industry representatives. The changes are intended to streamline inspection and certification processes, reducing operational burdens while maintaining compliance.
Public consultation underway
As part of the regulatory process, the USDA has opened a public comment period, allowing stakeholders to provide feedback before the rule is finalised.

The AMS stated that all submissions will be carefully reviewed to assess the potential impact on the agricultural economy and the availability of fruit for US consumers.
This initiative forms part of the USDA’s broader efforts to ensure that marketing orders remain effective and adaptable tools, helping producers stay competitive in an increasingly demanding global market.
