Through collaboration and research by the ‘Fundación Mas Badia’, apple producers have managed to increase their sustainability using the PGI Poma de Girona.
The first of the three projects being developed is GiroReg, which allows a 25-30% saving in water by using probes in the soil, connected by internet. There are over 130 points of control in the production areas that allow the amount of water being used to be known.
The second project to boost sustainability is called Fruit.Net and it allows biological control methods to be used in the fight against pests. Currently, almost 100% of the surface area in Girona uses natural products to fight against all the possible diseases that could affect the trees.
And lastly, at Mas Badia research has been carried out on new varieties of Gala apples with colour, with greater adaptability to high temperatures and, in general, to climate change. “The idea is that the investments we make are all used with the idea of providing more environmentally-friendly farming techniques. And on this point, I think we are on the right track,” the chairman of the PGI, Llorenç Frigola, points out.
