The latest from Nunhems in tomato has already won over consumers’ palates
In general, the market is demanding fruit with premium characteristics, particularly when referring to flavour. And the tomato is no different. For this reason, Nunhems, BASF’s fruit and vegetable seed brand, continues to give priority to this aspect when developing new materials, without neglecting the added value to the farmers (high production, resistances…). And both Marejada F1 and Mistela F1, their latest new developments, adapt perfectly to all the above.
The first one is a chocolate-coloured marmande that has been very well valued by consumers due to its external appearance, its flavour and good conservation. Its warm reception has meant that the markets are demanding it and, at the other end of the chain, producers have decided to give it a go due to its high production levels and the fact that it is resistant to the main diseases.
“In the past, consumers were disappointed with some marmandes on the market, but Marejada F1 does not disappoint”, states José Antonio Furió, tomato sales manager at BASF Vegetable Seeds. Its “spectacular” dark-green appearance and its pleasant chocolate colour when ripe, allow it to be eaten in both modes and its deeply grooved shape and good size mean that it has not gone by unnoticed. Due to all this, the prices have been above other marmandes from the competition.
The company’s other new development, Mistela F1, is a very flavourful plum cherry tomato with a traditional shape (date type), with a good colour. Furió emphasised its organoleptic qualities, with a “surprising balance between texture, juiciness, sugars and fineness of the skin”. The variety has a double aptitude for loose plants and vines owing to its post-harvest endurance.
Agronomically speaking, its plant, which is very open, offers earliness and a high production level, in addition to a resistance package to the main viruses.
Both Mistela F1 and Marejada F1 may be used for ecological crops due to their resistances and plant structure, with short , highly balanced internodes.
