Organic consumption grows by 4.1% in Europe in 2024

Retail sales reach 58.7 billion euros while organic farmland holds steady at 19.6 million hectares across Europe

Europe’s organic market closed 2024 with a new record in retail sales, confirming renewed consumer confidence in key markets. According to the latest figures published in The World of Organic Agriculture: Statistics and Emerging Trends 2026, retail sales in Europe reached 58.7 billion euros, representing a 4.1 percent increase. Within the European Union, sales rose by 3.6 percent to 49.5 billion euros.

Germany remained Europe’s largest organic market, with sales of 17.0 billion euros, followed by France (12.2 billion euros) and Italy (5.2 billion euros).

Switzerland leads in per capita consumption and market share

In relative terms, Switzerland once again ranked first worldwide in both per capita consumption and organic market share. Consumer spending reached 481 euros per person in 2024, while organic products accounted for 12.3 percent of total food sales.

On the production side, Europe’s organic farmland remained stable at 19.6 million hectares, of which 18.1 million hectares are located within the European Union. Organic land accounts for 3.9 percent of total agricultural land in Europe and 11.1 percent in the EU.

Spain continues to have the largest organic agricultural area in Europe with 2.9 million hectares, followed by France (2.7 million hectares) and Italy (2.5 million hectares). Liechtenstein maintains the highest organic land share worldwide at 43.5 percent.

International trade strengthens

International trade gained further momentum in 2024. The European Union imported approximately 2.64 million metric tons of organic agri-food products. The Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium were the largest importers by volume.

Ecuador remained the leading supplier, with tropical fruit — particularly bananas — accounting for a significant share of import volumes.

A market consolidating its position

The 2024 figures confirm the consolidation of Europe’s organic sector, combining moderate sales growth with a stable production base. The trend reflects a more mature market supported by steady demand and increasingly structured supply chains.
