“Mushrooms are rising in importance”

Mushrooms are one of the specialisation lines by Frutas Escandell during the autumn

“Mushrooms are the main stars of our autumn offer, mainly milk cap mushrooms and other varieties such as “ceps”, “llenegues” and “camagrocs”, mushrooms that are traditional in Catalan cooking and highly appreciated by the restaurant sector” according to Vicente Escandell, Manager of Frutas Escandell. He adds that “looking after the mushrooms when they are marketed and knowing how to give advice regarding the best moment to eat them are aspects that bring added value.”

Consolidated offer

From its stands in Mercabarna, Frutas Escandell offers a consolidated and complete range of quality fruit and vegetables. To do this, it has specific partners in each family of products, with whom they have been working together for many years.

Vicente Escandell, the third generation alongside his siblings Aurora and Joan and who for the past year have been working with the fourth generation, explains that “in fruit, we stand out in stone fruit, citrus fruit, pip fruit, grapes, melons and watermelons; and in vegetables, we have our range of winter vegetables. A special mention is deserved for our specialised lines in strawberries and mushrooms, (a very selective product) and cherries. We are now beginning with the D.O. Calanda Peaches from the Frutas del Martín brand, with which we have been linked for over twenty years.”

“We have evolved as a company and, currently, a large percentage of our sales are shipped to European clients, promoting our export line (specialising in clients who require groupage), alongside the Spanish home market.” Mercabarna’s trend plays an essential role on this point, which in recent years has increased international operations, attracting foreign buyers, mainly from Europe.

Frutas Escandell has an important, prestigious reputation in strawberries. The manager indicates that “around thirty years of work are translated into quality, confidence and reputation. We market strawberries, under the brands Naturfresa and No&Ca, with regularity and continuity, characteristics that are very highly valued. We have strawberries from different sources around Spain to cover the entire annual calendar, with the largest volume being produced from December to June.”

The producer holds a relevant place in Frutas Escandell’s DNA. Accordingly, Vicente Escandell comments that “we work side by side with our producers directly in the fields to select the ideal strawberries at each moment of the campaign.”
